"She can’t know,” Moira whispered. “That you’re watching her."
Moira Foy to Irial

Moira Foy was the daughter of Elena Foy and mother of Aislinn Foy. She is deceased by the titular novel, Wicked Lovely, but mentioned throughout the series. Her only physical appearance is in the prequel, Winter Dreams.

Biography

Early Life

Moira was born to Elena Foy and an unknown father many years before the events of the titular novel, though the reason for her father's lack of involvement in her life is unknown. As a child, she was told fables about the dangers of fae, thus she kept her abilities hidden from them. It was not until she was a young adult that Moira realized she would never be able to avoid the creatures. As a member of the Foy Family, Moira was a quarter fae and fated Summer Queen as foretold by the Foy Family Curse placed upon her lineage.

Winter Dreams

Main Article: Winter Dreams

In Winter Dreams, it is revealed that Moira is a dependent of a dark fae, though she is unaware of this secret. The Dark King, Irial, promises to protect her as he knows she is of importance to this court and, while he does not have any evidence, he incorrect suspects that she is a dependent of his former lover, Niall. The Foy Family Curse which was placed on the Foy Family draws the Summer King, Keenan, to her hometown and Irial instinctively acts to protect her. Unfortunately, before he is able to remove her from the situation, Keenan briefly meets her and begins her transformation into fae.

Later Life

It is later revealed that Moira was pregnant by an unknown man when Keenan began her transformation. The revelation of her pregnancy caused Keenan to temporarily halt his pursuit, though Moira was already aware of her new status due to her weakness which grew as a mixture of her pregnancy and physical distance from the Summer King. Moira ultimately took her own life shortly after giving birth to her daughter, Aislinn Foy, as she chose death over life as a faery. She was the only female courted by Keenan who was never given the chance to pick up the Winter Queen's Staff, a task which would have made her the Summer Queen given her family curse.

Physical Appearance

The physical appearance of Moira is never explicitly stated, though Aislinn Foy comments that her mother always looked as though "she couldn't quite handle the things she could see" in pictures.

Personality

Moira is a feisty young woman who, during her brief appearance in Winter Dreams, shows that she is unafraid of faeries even in their true form. She freely approaches the Dark King, Irial, and takes a cigarette from him all while revealing her knowledge of the faery courts. This is a surprisingly trait as those who are not fully fae are often terrified of them.

Abilities

Moira is unique in the sense that she is not an average halfling, she possessing very few features of her fae lineage. She does not appear to express any traits of a faerie at any time during her life.

Sight

Moira possessed Sight, the ability to see fae without their glamor. This ability is one that was considered hereditary in her family, both her mother and her daughter possessing the trait. It is clear that Moira struggled with her Sight, both Elena Foy and Aislinn Foy commenting that the ability haunted her in unimaginable ways.

Relationships

Aislinn Foy

Moira did not have much time with Aislinn Foy due to her passing away shortly after the birth of the latter; however, it is known that Moira loved her daughter deeply and wished she could live a different life - one without the curse of Sight.

Keenan

Keenan and Moira had a one-sided relationship in which the former was obsessed with courting the other. While in search of the fated Summer Queen, Keenan became attracted to Moira and decided she would be the next to brave the Winter Queen's Staff. Moira attempted to avoid him, but as he had decided she would be his Summer Queen, Keenan had already begun her transformation before realizing she was with child. Keenan did discontinue his pursuit of her upon this realization, but quickly found that it was too late - she had already been infected with Summer. After giving birth, Moira chose to take her own life rather than become fae. There was never a time in her life that Moira felt anything but disdain and hatred for Keenan.

Etymology

The name Moira is of English origin meaning "destiny", "share", or "fate".
